Uganda's Spring Birding Bonanza: Spotting the Shoebill & More

Welcome to Uganda, a land Winston Churchill famously dubbed the "Pearl of Africa." This equatorial paradise is a biodiversity hotspot, boasting lush rainforests, vast savannas, and shimmering lakes. For birdwatching enthusiasts, it's a dream destination, home to over 1,000 bird species. Spring, in particular, offers a spectacular avian bonanza, and at the top of every birder's list is a single, enigmatic prize: the Shoebill.

Just a short journey from Entebbe lies Mabamba Swamp, a vast wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria and a designated Ramsar site. This is the most reliable place in the world to spot the prehistoric-looking Shoebill. The experience is magical: you'll glide through narrow channels of papyrus and water lilies in a traditional dugout canoe, your guide expertly scanning the reeds. The anticipation builds until, finally, you spot it—a massive, grey, statue-like bird with a colossal, clog-shaped bill. It's a truly unforgettable moment.

While the Shoebill is the star, Mabamba is also home to a wealth of other species, including the African Jacana, Malachite Kingfisher, Swamp Flycatcher, and various herons and egrets.

After the adventure at Mabamba, the Entebbe Botanical Gardens offer a more tranquil but equally rewarding birding experience. Established in 1898, these gardens host a mix of indigenous forest, beautiful shoreline, and cultivated greenery. It's an excellent spot to spend an afternoon with your binoculars.

Look to the canopy for the dazzling Great Blue Turaco and several species of hornbills. The flowering shrubs attract a variety of colourful sunbirds, while the open areas are frequented by weavers and kingfishers. It's a perfect introduction to the sheer diversity of Uganda's birdlife.

While birding might be your primary goal, Uganda's wonders don't stop there. The country is one of the few places on Earth where you can trek to see mountain gorillas in their natural habitat—a profoundly moving experience. National parks like Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth offer classic safaris with chances to see lions, elephants, and giraffes.
